WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said the United States would support the protesters in Iran and called the situation there “unprecedented.”

In a message posted on social media, Trump expressed, “America is ready for helping the courageous protesters in Iran who are demanding freedom.” He went on to say that any US intervention would not mean troops on Iranian soil.

Trump further stated that there are reports of heavy unrest in Iran with some cities being mentioned. “The Iranian regime has been treating its people poorly for years, and now they are reaping the bitter fruit of their actions,” he remarked.

The protests in Iran have reached the 13th day and already violent confrontations have resulted in 65 fatalities, 15 of whom are security forces. Iranian outlets reported that police arrested more than 2,500 people and among those were 100 armed rioters in the vicinity of Tehran.

The internet services are completely down in the country for the third day, thus limiting the possibilities of communication and access to information.

Trump questions Modi’s governance over apache helicopter deal

Earlier on January 8, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his governance.

Speaking during a recent press interaction, Trump said India had ordered 68 Apache helicopters from the United States but had not received them despite waiting for five years.

Trump further claimed that Prime Minister Modi personally approached him seeking military assistance. Recounting the interaction, Trump said Modi came to meet him and requested support, adding that he responded by granting the meeting.

“I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because, you know, they’re paying a lot of tariffs now, because they’re not doing the oil,” he added, referring to India halting imports of Russian oil.

Trump also noted that the US is “getting rich because of tariffs”.

Meanwhile, India’s opposition Congress party took to X and uploaded a caricature of the scene, showing a timid Modi.
