ISLAMABAD: Bollywood actor and politician Prakash Raj stated at a Kerala Literature Festival, “Bollywood has lost its unique cultural identity and skilfulness because it does not address any of the real-world social issues or problems in the film industry.”

While discussing this topic with the audience at the Kerala Literature Festival, Prakash Raj stated that Hindi Cinema is creating artificial representations of our lives through its films which are, on many levels, disconnected from reality. He claimed that Bollywood has started to eliminate storytelling, truth and real-life elements from its current movies.

He believes that Hindi cinema now prioritizes profit-making and business interests which has caused its original authenticity to diminish. The Tamil and Malayalam film industries received his praise because their ongoing production of movies preserves their cultural and social value.

Prakash Raj’s remarks have once again sparked debate about the direction and purpose of mainstream Indian cinema

Prakash Raj declared that South Indian filmmakers represent the last remaining chance for Indian cinema because their movies feature powerful storylines. He praised young Tamil filmmakers who reveal Dalit community issues and social injustice problems because he sees this as an essential positive development.

He explained that Bollywood dedicated multiple years to creating movies that targeted multiplex theatre audiences. The movies showed an appealing visual style, according to him but they failed to represent actual life situations. The industry became completely absorbed in page-three culture and superficial glamour, which made it impossible to maintain contact with rural areas that included Rajasthan and Bihar.

The actor also criticized the current focus of the Hindi film industry because Hindi films now pay more attention to financial matters and social media promotion. He believes that this situation creates an increasing distance between movies and regular people.
