A 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines, after which an initial tsunami warning was issued in some coastal areas of the Philippines and Indonesia.
After the earthquake, aftershocks were felt on the coasts of Indonesia and the Philippines, due to which coastal populations were instructed to move to safer places. The Philippine President said that the government has instructed all relevant agencies to immediately evacuate coastal areas and ensure emergency arrangements.
A tsunami warning was also issued in the North Sulawesi and Papua regions of Indonesia, where waves up to 50 centimetres high were expected. The US National Tsunami Warning Centre said that tsunami waves can last for several hours after the first wave, and their impact depends on the geological structure of coastal areas.
