ISLAMABAD: Senior leader of the Muslim League (N) and Senator Pervaiz Rashid has urged political parties to play an effective role to resist Sohail Afridi from assuming the post of Chief Minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Talking to the media, Pervaiz Rashid said that the operations of the security forces to eradicate terrorism in the country require political support, and this support is always obtained from the provincial governments. He said that if the provincial government itself is a facilitator of terrorists, then the state institutions cannot run their operations effectively. He said, “How will we respond to the mothers, sisters and daughters of our martyrs that we have nominated those elements for the chief ministry who have been ideological or practical supporters of terrorists.”
Referring to the past statements of the nominated Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Senator Pervaiz Rashid said that his slogan was “If there is no Imran, then there is no Pakistan” and that he is making a person the Chief Minister who, according to him, “attacks Pakistan.”
Describing it as not just a political issue but a national security issue, he said, “It is the national responsibility of all of us to prevent such a person from becoming the Chief Minister. The PML-N and other democratic forces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will have to fight this temptation together.”
This strong stance of Pervaiz Rashid has sparked a new debate in political circles. Analysts say that if a wider opposition emerges on the nomination of Sohail Afridi, there could be an unexpected turn in the politics of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
