ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has approved an increase in the levy on high-octane fuel used in luxury vehicles, in a move aimed at easing the economic burden on the public.
Under the new decision, the existing levy of Rs100 per liter on high-octane fuel for premium cars will be increased by Rs200, bringing the total levy to Rs300 per liter.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the move would generate savings for the government while providing relief to ordinary citizens.
Officials said the measure will affect only the wealthiest vehicle owners, with no increase in fuel prices for ordinary and mid-range cars.
The government expects the policy to save approximately Rs9 billion per month, which, according to the Prime Minister, will be used to benefit the public.
The decision was taken during a video-link meeting attended by Federal Finance and Revenue Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Information Minister Atta Ullah Tarar, Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and senior government officials.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif directed that a detailed implementation plan be prepared and stressed that public transport and airline fares should remain unaffected by the levy increase.
