PESHAWAR: In an unusual move, Peshawar residents filed a petition in Peshawar High Court (PHC) over the increasing number of rats in the city.
The petition was submitted on behalf of citizens from Warsak Road, Charsadda Road, Bashirabad, and other neighbourhoods. The residents allege that the rat population increase results from insufficient sewage system maintenance and unsafe waste disposal methods which create hazardous conditions for their community.
The petitioners stated that they made multiple attempts to reach governmental and municipal offices yet their reported issues remained mostly ignored.
The issue is not new. The city of Peshawar experienced its first notable outbreak of rat-related human attacks which started in 2016. Only Lady Reading Hospital recorded 423 cases of rat bites in the said timeframe.
The Peshawar administration initiated a rat-catching program, providing a financial reward in 2016. The petition requests that the provincial government together with the Health Department and the Deputy Commissioner and the Chief Executive of WSSP and all relevant agencies must take urgent measures to control the escalating problem.
