PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted widespread rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) from December 30, 2025, to January 2, 2026, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to issue a travel advisory.

According to the PMD’s Regional Meteorological Office in Peshawar, a westerly low-pressure system is expected to enter the region on the night of December 29, 2025, affecting most parts of KP from December 30.

Under this weather system, fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected over Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Kolai Pallas, Malakand, Buner, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kurram, Khyber, Bajaur, and Mohmand until January 2, 2026.

Scattered to fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are likely in Swabi, Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar, Charsadda, Kohat, Hangu, Orakzai, Karak, Bannu, North and South Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan until January 1, 2026. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected at most hilly areas during the forecast period.

According to the PDMA advisory, Snowfall may lead to road closures and slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, and Galliyat. There is a risk of landslides and avalanches in hilly areas.

PDMA has urged authorities and the public to take necessary precautions, including deployment of additional resources and traffic management near tourist spots and vulnerable areas. Monitoring of rivers, streams, and local nullahs and Ensuring clear drainage systems to prevent urban flooding.

PDMA mentioned to Securing or removing billboards, hoardings, and loose structures vulnerable to strong winds. Farmers are advised to safeguard crops, while herders should protect livestock from adverse weather effects.

The general public is advised to seek shelter in safe areas such as sturdy buildings or underground structures during wind, thunderstorm, hailstorm, and avoid objects that pose a risk of failing or being struck by lightning. Ensure availability of emergency services personnel and equipment in areas at high risk of urban flooding, flash flooding, and landslides.

Authorities have stressed that these measures are necessary to minimize human and infrastructure losses during the upcoming spell of severe weather.
