Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam has said that Pakistan is making sincere efforts to mediate between US and Iran ongoing tension in the region.
During a media briefing in Islamabad, he said that there is continuous contact with Pakistan at the highest level, and Pakistan played a sincere role in reducing tensions. Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam said that Iran appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, there is a risk that the region will be seriously damaged by the increase in tensions. Iran does not want any new tension in the region.
He also said that the situation is being monitored continuously, the US demands are unacceptable. He said that recent statements by US President Donald Trump have come to light, and Trump’s statements claimed readiness for talks with Iran. Iran called these claims baseless and misleading.
He said that US statements regarding the talks are being used for internal political purposes, the US is trying to give the impression of talks to the international community, Iran made it clear that such claims are contrary to the ground realities.
Iranian Ambassador Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam said that violent incidents suddenly emerged on January 8, during peaceful protests, the presence of the police was a protective measure, and the security forces were instructed to protect the protesters.
He said that organized riots and vandalism were carried out in some cities of Iran, the number of violent elements was limited, but the damage was severe. Provocations were made through foreign media and social platforms.
He said that the situation in Iran remained extremely tense between January 8 and 11, and public gatherings were held between January 9 and 12 to restore stability. After January 12, the situation in Iran gradually began to come under control. The Iranian ambassador also said that on January 13, a statement was made on social media by the US President, in which he openly encouraged the occupation of government institutions.
He said that as a result of the violence, there were civilian casualties in Iran, many people were injured in these incidents, and many were arrested. He said that the investigation revealed links to terrorist groups, the elements involved were proven to be related to the Hypocrites and other armed groups, and the arrested people admitted to receiving external instructions.
Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam said that two main goals were set for the violence: the first goal was to target the police and security forces, the second goal was to spread fear among the citizens, inciting women and children. He said that the law and order situation in the country is now completely under control, the purpose of the violence was to create a justification for the US intervention. Iran has faced terrorism in the past, but the recent crimes were unusual.
He said that according to law enforcement agencies, the total financial loss was huge. According to reports from government and welfare organizations, 317 people were killed, 2,427 people were injured in the violence in Iran. A large number of miscreants were arrested, and links to terrorist networks were exposed during the investigation.
