LANDI KOTAL: Intense cross-border fighting erupted along the Pak-Afghan border on Tuesday, with heavy weapons reportedly used during the clash between Pakistani security forces and Afghan Taliban fighters.
Security sources said the confrontation began after an alleged firing from across the border, prompting a strong retaliatory response. In the ensuing exchange, Pakistani forces targeted multiple positions allegedly used by Afghan Taliban elements.
According to officials, at least two Afghan Taliban checkpoints were destroyed during the operation, along with a tank. Sources claimed that 11 Afghan Taliban fighters were killed and eight others wounded in the retaliatory action. However, there was no independent confirmation of the casualties from across the border.
Residents in nearby areas reported hearing loud explosions and sustained gunfire as the exchange continued for several hours. Authorities said the situation remained tense, with security forces on high alert to prevent further escalation.
Officials described the response as “measured but firm,” adding that Pakistan would take all necessary steps to safeguard its territorial integrity. Further details are awaited as the situation develops.
