RIYADH: Pakistan and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have signed a bilateral defence strategic agreement during the prime minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to KSA on Wednesday.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have signed a “Strategic Defence Agreement” between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. This agreement demonstrates the shared commitment of both countries to enhance their security and promote peace and stability in the region.

The purpose of the agreement is to foster defence cooperation and strengthen joint defence and security in the event of any aggression. If either country faces an act of aggression, it will be considered an attack on both nations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Yamama Palace, where he was received with a formal welcome by a cavalry contingent. The Saudi Crown Prince also extended a warm welcome to the Prime Minister.

During the ceremony, a well-dressed contingent of the Saudi Armed Forces provided a guard of honour, and the national anthems of both countries were played. Both leaders also took the opportunity to introduce their respective delegations.

The Pakistani delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Federal Ministers Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Attaullah Tarar, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Dr Mosaddiq Malik, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.

Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud welcomed the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, at Al Yamama Palace in Riyadh. The two leaders held a formal meeting with delegations from both countries present. At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his best wishes to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

During their discussions, the two sides reviewed the historical and strategic relations that have developed over nearly eight decades between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. They addressed several issues of mutual interest, highlighting their strong partnership built on brotherhood and Islamic solidarity, as well as shared strategic interests and close defence cooperation.


As a significant outcome of their meeting, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the “Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement” (SMDA) between the two countries. This agreement reflects their commitment to enhancing security and achieving peace in the region and beyond. It aims to promote defence cooperation and reinforce their collective security against any form of aggression, specifying that any aggression against one nation will be considered aggression against both.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed heartfelt gratitude to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He also conveyed his best wishes for the continued progress, prosperity, and well-being of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the people of Saudi Arabia. In response, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wished Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif good health and well-being, along with ongoing prosperity for the people of Pakistan.
