A major decision has been taken to make the security of the federal capital impregnable and bring about a revolutionary change in the operational capabilities of the police force, under which the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police will now receive elite commando training under the auspices of the Pakistan Army.
To implement this important project, the services of two serving Majors of the Pakistan Army and 16 specially trained SSG personnel have been sought by the Islamabad Police on priority basis.
The main objective of this collaboration is to modernize the recently formed ‘SWAT’ force of the Islamabad Police. This special team is being prepared to carry out anti-terrorism operations, rescue hostages and deal with any emergency situation that may arise in the city.
According to the plan, two Pakistan Army majors and six SSG experts will directly train the SWAT team personnel in guerrilla warfare, civil defence and the use of modern weapons, while the remaining ten personnel will be deployed at the National Police Academy to hone the professional skills of ASPs under training.
The letter sent to the government by the IG Islamabad has emphasized that the traditional structure of the police is inadequate in view of the current security challenges facing the federal capital, VIP movement and the delicate law and order situation. The police need a ‘strike force’ that is capable of responding quickly and effectively to any major threat.
This training, under the supervision of the best commandos of the Pakistan Army, will not only boost the morale of the police personnel but will also bring them at par with the elite units of the army in terms of professional skills. With this initiative, the Islamabad Police will now emerge as a modern fighting force, instead of just a civil force, which will be ready at all times to protect the lives and property of citizens.
