ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Istanbul, Turkey, have reached a complete deadlock.
In a discussion on a private TV program, he mentioned that there is currently no plan for the next round of talks with Afghanistan.
Khawaja Asif expressed gratitude towards Turkey and Qatar for their sincere efforts as mediators, noting that both countries are supportive of Pakistan’s position. He emphasised that the Afghan delegation insisted on verbal commitments, which he deemed insufficient.
According to Asif, final agreements made during international talks must be documented in writing. While the Afghan delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s stance during discussions, they were unwilling to put their agreement in writing.
Earlier, Information Minister Atta Tarar had also commented on the talks, thanking Turkey and Qatar for their mediation. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled position that the Afghan government is responsible for terrorism originating from Afghan soil. Tarar pointed out that the Afghan Taliban have yet to meet their international, regional, and bilateral commitments under the 2021 Doha Peace Agreement.
Furthermore, he reiterated that Pakistan holds a spirit of goodwill towards the Afghan people and wishes for a peaceful future for them. The Information Minister also stated that Pakistan will not endorse any actions by the Taliban government that do not benefit the Afghan people or neighbouring countries. Pakistan will continue to take necessary measures to protect its citizens and maintain national sovereignty.
