ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar on Sunday welcomed the Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire agreement reached late Saturday night in Doha, describing it as “the first step in the right direction.”
In a post on X, Dar thanked Qatar and Turkiye for their “constructive role” in facilitating the talks that led to the breakthrough. He said Pakistan now looks forward to the establishment of a “concrete and verifiable monitoring mechanism” in the next round of talks, to be hosted by Turkiye, aimed at addressing terrorist threats originating from Afghan soil.
“It is vital to ensure that no more lives are lost,” he emphasized.
According to the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ceasefire was finalized after 13 hours of negotiations between the two delegations in Doha. Both sides also agreed to set up a permanent framework to promote peace and stability, with a follow-up meeting planned to oversee implementation.
The ministry said the agreement would strengthen peace, security, and stability between the two “brotherly Islamic nations,” helping to end border tensions and promote lasting regional harmony.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif also confirmed the development on X, saying the ceasefire marks an end to terrorist activity originating from Afghan territory.
