PESHAWAR: The Federal Government and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) have not accepted the election of the new Chief Minister (CM) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and declared their decision to file a case in court regarding this issue.
The government, comprising the PML-N leaders, went to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s house where they had a thorough dialogue with the party heads.
Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Engineer Amir Muqam, and Azam Nazir Tarar from the PML-N, while JUI-F was represented by Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Allama Rashid Mehmood Somroo, MPA Sajad Khan, and Makhdoom Aftab Shah were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, political events in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were discussed and the federal government along with JUI-F condemned the election of the new CM in the provincial assembly and termed as unconstitutional. They proclaimed the voting procedure as an infringement of the constitution.
It was a consensus that all the opposition parties in the KP provincial assembly would not recognize the election process for the Chief Minister.
The opposition has also maintained that they would adopt a legal and constitutional way to deal with the issue and would officially request the court through a team of lawyers.
Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly elected new Chief Minister Sohail Afridi despite the opposition uproar and walkout from the assembly on Monday.
A total of 90 MPAs voted in support of Sohail Afridi amid strong opposition and reservations from the opposition MPAs. Opposition Leader Dr Ibadullah said that this move of PTI is unconstitutional and they would move the Peshawar High Court against this unconstitutional step of PTI. He said that how two Chief Ministers can run the affairs of the province, if one Chief Minister already retains the designation of the Chief Minister.
Addressing his inaugural speech, Sohail Afridi said that first he is Pakistani and then he is a Pakhtun. He did not become Chief Minister with a piece of paper but was elected with the votes of the public. He said that tribal people are very happy with this choice of Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He said that peace and development of tribal areas would be his top priority.
