OpenAI has made an exciting move into the world of web browsing with the introduction of ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered browser.
Atlas is now available to users around the globe on Apple’s macOS, with plans to expand support to Windows, iOS, and Android in the near future. This launch comes after speculation back in July about OpenAI’s potential challenge to Google Chrome’s longstanding dominance. A formal reveal of Atlas is expected soon, featuring a livestream presentation by CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by tech leaders including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and others with a mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Originally launched as a non-profit research lab, OpenAI aimed to advance digital intelligence in a way that was transparent, collaborative, and safe.
In 2019, OpenAI transitioned into a “capped-profit” model to attract the capital needed for large-scale AI development while still prioritising its ethical goals. That same year, it partnered with Microsoft, which invested $1 billion to support OpenAI’s growth and infrastructure.
OpenAI gained global attention with the release of powerful language models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3, showcasing the potential of large-scale neural networks. In November 2022, it launched ChatGPT, a conversational AI built on GPT-3.5, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing applications in history. Later, GPT-4 brought even more advanced capabilities in understanding, reasoning, and generating human-like responses.
Today, OpenAI stands as a leading force in AI research and development, intending to create safe and useful AI tools while navigating the challenges of advanced machine intelligence.
