OpenAI has introduced a new and comprehensive version specially developed for teachers called ChatGPT for Teacher, which is being called the company’s biggest breakthrough in the education sector so far.
This platform is designed for K–12 teachers and school districts to use artificial intelligence safely, effectively and confidently in teaching responsibilities, planning and daily tasks. In the initial phase, this system is being introduced in a few select school districts in the US, which collectively represent about 150,000 teachers. Certified K–12 teachers in the US will be able to use it completely free of charge until June 2027. The goal is to give schools time to better understand the use of AI and to shape policy.
OpenAI has made it clear that teacher data on the platform will not be used to train models, which is a direct response to a key concern for many school administrators. According to the company’s vice president of education, Lia Belsky, the main goal is to provide teachers with tools that can truly help them in their daily work.
According to her, “We want teachers to not only have access to AI, but also to have an experience that is aligned with their practical needs, so that they can set the direction of their use of AI themselves.” The new platform is offering several tools for teachers that are not available in the regular version, including Higher usability and advanced GPT. 5.1 auto models. In the first phase, this service is being introduced in major districts in California, Texas, and Virginia. Teachers can use the service by verifying their status through SheerID on the OpenAI website. The company says that after 2027, it is possible that payment for this service will be introduced, but schools will be informed in a timely manner and efforts will be made to keep prices as affordable as possible.
