ABU DHABI: Couples from around the world can now get married through Abu Dhabi’s government application, without needing to visit the Emirate, according to the project leader, who spoke to International Media.

Although the concept of online marriage is still new, some countries have launched similar services. Ukraine created a government app last year, allowing couples separated by conflict to marry remotely.

In 2019-20, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Arab Emirates allowed online marriage ceremonies for residents. However, the latest version of the service aims to reach a much broader audience, said Mohamed Al Askar, who oversees the Abu Dhabi government’s TAMM app.

“This service is available to anyone wishing to get married in Abu Dhabi, regardless of nationality,” he informed AFP at the Dubai-based Gitex technology event. “People can complete the entire process online, without visiting any offices. We are among the first to offer such a service.”

For a fee of 800 dirhams (approximately $218), couples can fill out forms, upload documents, schedule an officiant, and even arrange a virtual wedding ceremony within 24 hours. The service is open to Emirati citizens, residents, and non-residents, though those outside the country will require a lawyer or representative in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE stands out in the Gulf region as the only country allowing civil marriages for foreigners. This marriage service is part of the latest update to the TAMM app, which provides access to over 1,000 government services for Emirate residents.
