WASHINGTON: If you are looking for a tasty way to keep your heart safe, science has some good news for you: the intake of nuts like almonds, walnuts, and cashews can significantly reduce the total risk of death from heart-related diseases, that is, from heart attacks and strokes, etc.

An extensive study by Loma Linda University, USA, has gone through the diet data of more than 80,000 individuals from the U.S. and Canada for the years 2002-2007.

First of all, the study featured in the Journal of Nutrition, pointed that people eating nuts very often had 17%-27% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases compared to those who ate nuts rarely.

The scientists involved in this research mentioned that, although cardiovascular diseases still account for the majority of deaths worldwide, prevention – especially through diet – can be very effective in lowering the risk.

While this study only observed the situation and hence, did not establish any direct cause-and-effect relationship, it is also known from earlier research that nuts intake is beneficial for the heart.

The researchers point out that nuts are not only good sources of magnesium but are also rich in fiber and essential vitamins which all work together to reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure. These nutrients, therefore, help to keep the arteries in good health and at the same time diminish the chances of heart diseases.

The authors of the study indicated that the combination of red meat limitation and nut consumption increase could result in as much as 35% to 44% reduction in the risk of dying from heart-related causes. In a nutshell, they are of the view that a great deal of research is still required to confirm the hypothesis.
