PESHAWAR: In a major crackdown to dismantle the encroachment mafia, Peshawar City Traffic Police (CTP) arrested 87 suspects and confiscated three truckloads of encroaching and illegal goods spread across the city.
According to details, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Haroon Rasheed Khan ordered the encroachers to dismantle illegal structures. Once this was ignored, directed operations commenced.
The CTP instigated directed operations across the several city divisions, which led to the seizure of goods without permissions from trade and the arrests of the people blocking roads. Encroachments, which, as per the Traffic Police, are structures unlawfully built and are consequences of self-interest, are a huge public detriment.
These encroachments were the main reason of the illegal taking of road space and of setting unsanctioned vehicle parking locations.
Most significantly, illegal impounded vehicles and bikes were moved to official terminals, which ease parking operations.
This was followed by jail time as a result of the seizure of roads by vehicle owners, 35 of them, during the peak road closure hours, and for the unregulated bike stacking by 75 riders during road closures.
CTO warned that unregulated encroachments attracting heavy penalties must be removed by the owners or legal penalties will follow.
