SOST, Gilgit-Baltistan: The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has maintained operations at Sost Dry Port, which functions normally during winter weather, when temperatures range from minus 25 to minus 30 degrees Celsius, enabling continuous cargo operations throughout the winter season.
NLC began operations at Sost Dry Port in April 2018. The initial phase required both infrastructure upgrades and facility enhancements to fulfill trader requirements while making cargo operations more efficient. The officials discovered that the port suffered from a major problem because it closed its operations from November 30 every year until severe weather conditions ended.
NLC increased its operational capacity while implementing new strategies that allowed the port to remain operational throughout the winter months. The port maintained its operations throughout both the 2024–25 and 2025–26 winter periods. The port recorded 597 vehicle crossings during its closure period which marked a major increase from previous years when the port had no vehicle operations.
This year 320 vehicles have crossed through the port during only one month and officials believe that 400 to 500 more vehicles will arrive by April.
Extreme weather and energy supply were the biggest challenges. NLC installed a solar power system and three large generators to provide essential power for their operations. NLC upgraded internet services to maintain operational stability for customs and other digital systems. NLC installed modern heating systems throughout their offices and residential buildings to safeguard staff members working in freezing temperatures.
The loading and unloading operations have maintained their normal operations throughout three major snowstorms which occurred this winter. The port has achieved complete winter operation for its second consecutive year according to official statements which confirm that port management now possesses sufficient resources to manage upcoming operational difficulties.
The local community has experienced benefits from the development work. The port employs approximately 95 percent of its workforce who come from the surrounding local community. NLC has extended its support to regional development through its logistic operations by funding infrastructure development and social initiatives which include building a block at the local high school to support examination and community functions.
The organization supports local sports events by funding activities which include marathons and the Tour de Khunjerab cycling event and the Shandur Polo festival to promote youth involvement in fitness activities.
Officials describe the Sost Dry Port as a “game changer” for the region because it improves cross-border trade and drives economic development which continues throughout the region’s most extreme winter months.
