ISLAMABAD: The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has made announcements regarding the closure of several motorways in the country because of the thick fog, which has made travel in the impacted areas a considerably hard task. The fog has made conditions unsafe for the drivers and consequently, the authorities have closed off some portions of the highways.

As per the report of the NHMP, for now, the following motorways have been closed because of the heavy fog: M-1 is inoperative from Peshawar to Ghazi Hazro Interchange, M-2 is not functioning from Thokar Niaz Baig to Balkassar Interchange, M-3 is not in use from Faizpur to Drahkhanah, M-4 is not in operation from Pindi Bhattian to Sher Shah, M-5 is out of service from Rohri to Multan, and M-14 is closed off from Khadrapa to Isa Khel.

Visibility has been extremely low in these areas and thus travel is very risky. The officials are recommending the route and to wait for the fog to disperse when taking a different way.

These advisories from the NHMP are intended for travelers, and it is recommended that they follow radio and online traffic updates.   NHMP stated “Fog will be around for a while longer, and our major concern is still safety.”

Thousands of people who ride back and forth daily in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa areas have been adversely affected by these closures. The routes that have been shut down are the ones most used for the transfer of both goods and people therefore, the closures have been causing both passenger and cargo waiting times to increase.

Along with motorway closures, the authorities have taken measures such as increasing patrols and also dispatching emergency response teams to assist and make the travellers feel safe.
