ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a fresh notification regarding the net metering rate, introducing significant changes in the existing policies.

The notification clearly states that the existing solar net metering contracts will not be affected, and the licenses for existing solar net metering users will remain in effect until the licenses expire. This implies that those individuals who are currently enjoying the benefits of the net metering system will still have to pay the same amount as they have in the past.

The recent notification clearly states that if the user intends to add more capacity to the solar system, they will not be allowed to enjoy the previous rate. This will come into effect from February 9, 2026, as part of the amendments in the Solar Regulations 2026.

Earlier, the NEPRA authority had cancelled the “unit for unit” system for net metering, and in a recent development, the authority approved the introduction of “net billing” for both existing and new solar net metering users. In spite of this, the recent notification clearly states that the Prime Minister Imran Khan’s decision regarding the previous rate for existing solar net metering users has been implemented, and they will still have the benefit of the previous rate.

This recent development is likely to have a significant impact on the solar energy consumers regarding the electricity they produce and consume. This recent development clearly shows the changing stance of the government regarding the solar energy consumers.

The recent changes in the solar energy policies will require solar energy consumers to keep themselves informed regarding the recent changes in the solar energy policies.
