The 18th death anniversary of former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party leader Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is being observed with devotion and respect today.

Tributes are being paid across the country to Shaheed-e-Jamhooriat Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her death anniversary, remembering her life, leadership, and sacrifices for democracy in the country.

On December 27, 2007, Benazir left the world in a fatal attack on her return from a rally in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was the first woman prime minister of the Muslim world and was elected twice by the people of Pakistan.

More than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on the occasion of the anniversary and strong checking is being maintained at the entry and exit points. Security agencies are on full alert to deal with any untoward incident.

At a time when democracy repeatedly faced restrictions, authoritarian rule prevailed, and political space for women remained limited, she consistently struggled for the supremacy of the Constitution, Parliament, and the people’s right to vote.

Her repeated electoral victories reflected her firm belief in peaceful politics and democratic values.

She was regarded as a voice for the marginalized segments of society. Farmers, workers, and underprivileged families identified closely with her leadership, which placed public welfare at its core.

During her tenure, she focused on expanding opportunities in education, employment, basic services, and social development, particularly for the youth.

Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto envisioned an inclusive Pakistan based on tolerance and equal rights. She strongly opposed sectarianism, hatred, and intolerance, and consistently raised her voice for the protection of minority rights.

Her vision was of a country where followers of all religions could live with dignity, equality, and security.

She also believed that Pakistan must progress in step with a rapidly changing world, emphasizing the importance of democratic continuity and social harmony for national development.
