The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a clarification stating that digital identity cards carry the same legal weight as physical cards and must be accepted as valid proof of identity.

The authority noted that despite existing regulations, various government and private institutions continue to demand physical cards or photocopies. NADRA categorised this practice as a violation of the digital identity framework established under the NADRA Ordinance. A spokesperson emphasised that under NADRA Regulations 9 and 10, digital documents are granted full legal status and can be presented for verification across all platforms.

By promoting digital identification, NADRA aims to eliminate the need for paper copies, thereby protecting the environment and enhancing the security of citizens’ personal data. The authority highlighted that digital cards help prevent the misuse of sensitive information. Consequently, all government departments, financial institutions, banks, and telecom operators have been directed to ensure immediate compliance.

Citizens have been advised that if any institution refuses to honour a digital card, they can lodge a formal complaint through NADRA’s official “NARAZ” system.
