Fraudsters have started stealing money from customers by creating a drama of a wrong transfer. State Bank has issued instructions to be careful.
The State Bank of Pakistan has warned the public not to fall for the trap of sending money by mistake, as this is a new financial fraud through which fraudsters are trying to steal money from citizens’ accounts. According to the central bank, such fraudsters usually claim through phone calls or messages that they have ‘mistakenly’ transferred money to a customer’s account. Later, they pressure the victim to return the money immediately, although this is a planned fraud.
Do not return the money yourself; contact the bank
The State Bank has instructed citizens that if money from an unknown person is transferred to your account, do not return the money yourself, but immediately contact the helpline or branch of your bank. In such cases, fake transaction messages or screenshots are sent targeting the affected user’s account, so that he get worried and transfers the money.
A State Bank spokesperson said that citizens need to be careful during digital banking. Do not provide your personal information, bank account, or OTP to anyone, even if they pretend to be a representative of the bank.
He added that the State Bank and commercial banks are taking action against such fraudsters, but the vigilance of consumers is the most effective defence.
