NEW YORK: In a ground-breaking election, the Muslim candidate Zaharan Mamdani has been chosen as the new Mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa.
The mayoral election of this year not only saw a new record for voter turnout but also marked the highest participation since 2001. Polling stations throughout the city witnessed over 1.7 million New Yorkers waiting in line to cast their votes.
Mamdani, despite receiving harsh criticism and facing opposition from powerful personalities like former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, has scored a significant win, he is the very first Muslim leader of New York City.
On the other hand, local and state elections took place in all 50 states of the U.S.
In Virginia, counting was done for the governor and lieutenant governor races. According to U.S. media reports, the Democratic Party scored an epic win with Abigail Spanberger being the first female governor of Virginia, as indicated by exit polls.
Moreover, Ghazala Hashmi, another Democrat, was crowned as the lieutenant governor, thus, becoming the first Indian-American and Muslim woman to hold that position in the state.
In New Jersey, the Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill is slightly ahead in the governor’s election as the tallying goes on.
