NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor, referred Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “War Criminal” who instigated the Gujarat riots in 2002.
The statement of Mamdani was found in a video recording that has been widely shared on the internet. One of his points was that Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, was actively involved in the 2002 Gujarat riots. He also noted that his father was a Muslim from Gujrat, India, and he is thus personally connected with the tragic events there.
Mamdani who, amongst other things, is known for his radical views on Indian politics and the promotion of Muslim rights, accused Narendra Modi of murdering the Muslims of Gujarat that he directed the massacre. The 2002 violence, which is also called the Gujarat riots, led to the deaths of over a thousand people of the Muslim community and most of the killers were by fire.
After the incident, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi, was condemned for his failure to control the situation, and complicity in the 2002 riots, and he is still being blamed for the riots and the role of his administration. which has been a fiercely debated issue for many years.
“My dad was a Muslim from Gujrat, India. And it was Modi who masterminded the mass slaughter of Muslims in Gujrat, “Mamdani said in a video, which helped to create an intimate and emotional dimension to his indictment.

The riots in Gujarat are regarded to be among the very tragic events of India’s recent past history. The critics have argued that the violence was only one aspect of a large pattern of attacks against Muslims by Hindu nationalist forces. After the riots, Modi was charged with many offenses, among which were the accusations of doing very little to stop the violence and even directly aiding it, and yet he has always denied it. In 2012 a special investigation team (SIT), after a thorough investigation cleared Modi of any involvement, but the question of his innocence still remains.
