BEIRUT: Lebanon has declared Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Shibani as an “unacceptable person” and ordered him to leave the country by March 29. The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given the Iranian envoy a deadline, after which harsher measures could be taken.

The Iranian Embassy will maintain its operations according to a confirmation from Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry. The Iranian Embassy will continue its work according to Lebanese Foreign Ministry officials, but the ambassadorial position will be filled by a charge d’affaires.

The Lebanese government accused Hezbollah of acting as an Iranian proxy which leads the country into regional conflicts, particularly the ongoing U.S.-Israel war. A Lebanese government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Hezbollah, at Iran’s behest, has involved Lebanon in the conflict, leading to disastrous consequences for the Lebanese people.

The officials seek to diminish Hezbollah’s control in Lebanon which has created ongoing conflicts in the country. The United States and Israel pressured Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah through military action within one year.

The increasing conflict between Lebanon and Hezbollah, which Iran supports, shows how regional disputes have become more intense while Lebanon’s foreign policy has undergone major changes.
