PESHAWAR (Kashif Uddin): In a significant effort to address environmental challenges and enhance public transport infrastructure, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has announced plans to launch a modern green transport network in seven major cities across the province.

This initiative, supported by a $200 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to provide eco-friendly, low-emission transport solutions, significantly reducing air pollution in urban areas.

The cities included in this ambitious project are Peshawar, Mardan, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Kohat, Abbottabad, and Mingora (Swat). Currently, these cities either lack a structured public transportation system or suffer from limited options. The new green transport network will introduce state-of-the-art, low-emission vehicles to the region, offering a sustainable and efficient public transport option for the growing urban populations.

According to official documents, the primary goal of the project is to improve air quality by reducing the number of high-emission vehicles on the roads. The initiative also aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by providing safe, reliable, and accessible travel options. Traffic congestion is expected to decrease significantly, resulting in smoother commutes and contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

The $200 million loan from ADB will be allocated in two parts: $150 million will be sourced from ADB’s regular financing, while $50 million will be provided under concessional terms, alleviating some financial burdens on the provincial government. The funding will also cover costs associated with developing the necessary infrastructure to support the new green transport system.

A key aspect of the project is the inclusion of women in the public transport sector. Special emphasis will be placed on creating safe and gender-sensitive transport facilities to ensure women’s active participation. The project plans to introduce women-only buses and secure travel options for female passengers.

The provincial government is optimistic that the new transport network will not only address environmental concerns but also promote economic growth by improving connectivity, enhancing mobility, and creating new job opportunities. Moreover, it is expected to reduce the number of private vehicles on the road, easing the strain on existing infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with the province’s broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure and promote sustainable development practices. As work on the project commences, officials have promised swift implementation, aiming to have the green transport network operational in the near future.
