PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department has sent samples from five cases of the influenza virus, including some from Peshawar, to the National Institute of Health in Islamabad for diagnosis.

This action comes in response to the spread of the superflu in various countries. Currently, a significant number of seasonal influenza cases are being reported in the province, leading to a dramatic increase in patient visits, especially in major hospitals.

Most of these patients are children suffering from severe illnesses such as respiratory issues, flu, and pneumonia, which has intensified the pressure on both the chest and children’s wards in hospitals. It has become common for four children to be accommodated in each bed, resulting in overcrowded conditions in these wards.

Sources indicate that numerous seasonal influenza cases are emerging from several districts, including Peshawar. However, there is substantial concern among the public regarding the new H3N2 superflu, which has led to a surge in the number of seasonal influenza patients visiting hospitals. Despite having sent samples of suspected superflu cases to the National Institute of Health in Islamabad, the health department has yet to receive results after two months, leaving them unaware of the full extent of these cases.

In response, the health department has issued comprehensive advisories to all hospitals concerning Superflu. Hospitals are directed to implement special measures, particularly instructing medical staff to wear masks and gloves and adhere to precautionary protocols. Additionally, hospitals are required to isolate any such patients and notify the health department immediately if any symptoms arise.

According to recent reports, 20% of samples tested at the National Institute of Health in Islamabad were found to be H3N2 superflu, raising alarms about the situation. As the cold weather intensifies this season, there are concerns about a further increase in cases.

The health department reports that over 60,000 seasonal influenza cases have been registered at three major hospitals in Peshawar. The situation is reportedly worse in many districts, where the number of cases has risen sharply due to severe cold, gas shortages, and a lack of healthcare facilities. Common symptoms among the affected individuals include cough, severe cold, headache, body aches, and, in some cases, fever.

Health experts warn that seasonal influenza cases may continue to be reported until February, emphasising the importance of public vigilance. It is recommended that children and the elderly dress warmly and consume hot drinks while taking precautions against the cold. Furthermore, avoiding spitting in public places, wearing masks, and practising regular handwashing should be mandatory.
