PESHAWAR: Opposition parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Monday announced to field a joint candidate for the upcoming Senate elections.

A meeting of opposition parties, called by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Khyber Province, took place at Mufti Mahmood Markaz in Peshawar.

The meeting was chaired by JUI-Ameer Senator Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman. Attendees included JUI-A Senator Maulana Atta-ul-Haq Darwesh, Senator Haji Dilawar Khan, Abdul Jalil Jan, Maulana Abdul Hasib Haqqani, Israr Ahmed, PPP representatives Syed Ayub Shah and Malik Saeed, Awami National Party’s Hussain Shah and Nisar Baz Mohand MPA, Muslim League’s Murtaza Abbasi and Malik Zarwar Khan, PTI’s Habib Ali Shah, Arif Mohmand, and Arbab Waseem MPA, as well as Salahuddin Fazal Malik.

During the meeting, participants discussed the nomination of a joint candidate from the opposition parties for the Senate by-elections. All parties agreed that they are united on a single platform and that a common strategy should be developed regarding the candidate. It was decided that a candidate will be announced by the provincial leaders in the next two days following consultations with the parliamentary party.
