PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has become the first province to enact the Digital Payments Act to promote the digital economy.

According to a statement issued by the CM KP office on Saturday, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has approved the Digital Payments Act 2025. The bill will be sent to the cabinet for approval.
CM Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Sohail Afridi, said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa became the first province to introduce a legal framework for the digital economy.
He said under this law, digital payments through QR code will be mandatory in the government, business and service sectors
And no new sales tax will be levied on businesses registered under the new law for two years from the digital payments.
He said taking additional charges on digital payments will be prohibited, and businesses that refuse to accept payments through digital payments will face legal action under this law.
“Digital transactions will increase transparency, convenience and financial security. The bill will prove to be an important milestone for financial inclusion, transparency and modernisation of the economy,” Sohail Afridi emphasised.

He further added that the Protection of consumer and business data will be ensured under the law, while public Wi-Fi and digital services will be introduced in markets for public convenience.
CM said the educational curriculum will include financial and digital literacy, and implementation and onboarding will be facilitated at the district level.
