PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched a transgender registration form representing the province’s serious attempt to officially incorporate the transgender community into the formal system. This step is designed to enhance access to welfare initiatives, government facilities and social security programs, for the transgender population.
The Department of Social Welfare introduced the form working together with Blue Vens and the National Commission for Human Rights. The launch event included attendees from NADRA government representatives and members of the transgender community. At the ceremony speakers emphasized the difficulties caused by accurate data, on the transgender population noting that census statistics frequently underestimate their numbers.
Imran Khan, the Additional Secretary of Social Welfare spoke to the audience highlighting the importance of including the transgender community in registries to ensure their equal access to job quotas, government aid and protection frameworks. He referred to the form as a crucial move, in reaching this objective.
Authorities also mentioned that NADRA will assist with the registration procedure using mobile registration units that will travel to residences and transgender groups to gather applications. This method is designed to access individuals who might be hesitant to go to government offices because of stigma or safety issues.
Attendees highlighted the necessity of keeping contact with the district social welfare offices in order to make the process user-friendly and efficient, which in turn would allow the large number of transgender people to be officially registered and, hence, have their right to live in a dignified manner assured.
The project is a major breakthrough for the transgender community in Pakistan as it has already started to prepare the ground for their empowerment and integration into the society.
