PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to establish eight schools in different districts of the province using light-gauge structure design to improve the quality of construction.

A meeting of the Construction and Works Department was convened under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shahab Ali Shah.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Construction and Works Department and other concerned officials. During the meeting, the formation of the Strategic Planning, Design and Supervision Unit (SPDSU) was discussed in detail. The primary objective of establishing SPDSU is to strengthen the Construction and Works Department by ensuring transparency, cost-effectiveness, and the adoption of modern and sustainable technologies. The unit will have dedicated HR and tools to drive excellence and ensure quality assurance across all civil works. Notably, the SPDSU is a key component of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government’s Construction and Works Department Good Governance Roadmap.

The meeting deliberated on various options for the establishment of SPDSU, which will play a pivotal role in enhancing the department’s capabilities. Furthermore, the Construction and Works Department is collaborating with the Elementary and Secondary Education Department to establish eight schools in five districts using light-gauge structure design. This innovative approach will ensure time-saving and cost-effectiveness in projects related to education and health, ultimately enhancing public service delivery.

The Chief Secretary emphasised the importance of adopting modern technologies to save time and ensure cost-effectiveness. It was told that the C&W department has completely shifted to E-Pads and is ensuring 100% e-procurement, with bid submission, call deposits, and work analysis being conducted online. A Road Asset Management System has been operationalised to assess and monitor road infrastructure.

The Chief Secretary stressed that these reforms are crucial in line with modern-age technologies, and their implementation will significantly improve the department’s efficiency and effectiveness. By leveraging technology and innovative approaches, the Construction and Works Department aims to deliver high-quality public services in a timely and cost-effective manner.
