ISLAMABAD: Following the Movement for the Protection of the Constitution of Pakistan, the country’s second-largest opposition party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), has announced a nationwide protest for February 8. JUI plans to observe this day as a “Black Day” in response to the general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024, and protests will be held across the country to mark this occasion.

JUI spokesperson Aslam Ghauri stated that the observance of Black Day is a response to the ongoing weakening of democracy and the mockery of the Constitution of Pakistan. He emphasised that the party will not accept the undermining of the public mandate under any circumstances.

According to Ghauri, JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman will address the central protest in Rawalpindi, while vigorous protests will also take place in all provincial headquarters. He mentioned that passionate supporters will protest against the rulers’ actions that deviate from the Quran and Sharia. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam aims to stand with the people against issues such as inflation, unemployment, unrest, and lawlessness.

Ghauri further asserted that the party will pursue every constitutional, democratic, and peaceful method to protect Sharia, the Constitution, and democracy. He has urged party workers to finalise preparations for the protest and to effectively observe Black Day.
