Converting unused land, vacant plots and barren parts in various sectors and commercial centres of Islamabad into small rented food points can be a great step for the economy and beauty of the city.

The main objective of this project is to make these areas clean of garbage and weeds and make them active business centres where citizens can get quality and cheap food.

Liaqat Khan a businessmen and resident of Islamabad told Pakhtun Digital that under this project, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) can identify such places that are currently not in use. Instead of permanent concrete buildings, modern designed shipping containers or portable wooden kiosks can be installed at these places. This will not only reduce the construction cost but also make it easy to move these structures if needed. The design of these food points should be uniform so that there is no disruption to the overall beauty and master plan of the city.

From a financial point of view, this project can become a permanent source of income for the government. These places can be given on a temporary lease of one to three years through open auction, from which the rent can be spent on the development of the city.

To maintain transparency in this process, it is necessary to introduce a digital licensing system. Moreover, training and certification from the Islamabad Food Authority should be made mandatory for the staff working at these points so that there is no compromise on cleanliness and quality.

Keeping in mind the eco-friendly aspect, the use of solar energy should be promoted in these food points and the use of biodegradable utensils should be made mandatory instead of plastic. There should be a specific dustbin and recycling system at each point for waste management so that the surrounding environment is not damaged.

This model will not only create new business opportunities for unemployed youth and small investors but will also turn these “dead zones” of Islamabad into bright and vibrant places, which will increase the vibrancy of the city.
