TEHRAN: Iran has taken a hardline position in its ongoing negotiations with the United States, with several key demands emerging as the country gears up for potential talks. The shift in Tehran’s diplomatic approach comes amid growing influence from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in decision-making, especially after the outbreak of the ongoing conflict.
Iranian government sources have told Reuters that Iran’s diplomatic approach has shifted toward increased strictness since the conflict started. Iran will present its most important demands when the mediation process transforms into actual treaty negotiations.
Iran demands two main conditions from the United States which include an immediate end to military operations and a legal commitment from the US that it will not conduct any future military activities. The Iranian authorities will demand compensation payments from the United States to cover all damage and losses that occurred during the current military conflict. The Iranian government demands complete authority over the Strait of Hormuz which serves as a crucial shipping channel for international oil transport.
Iran has declared its intention to refuse all discussions regarding limits on its missile development program which represents a major and essential matter for the Iranian administration.
Iran intends to send its top officials which include Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to participate in the upcoming negotiations. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will maintain control over decision-making processes because it will determine the terms of the treaty which will uphold the military establishment’s fundamental policies.
Trump claims Iran’s new leadership is open to negotiations and potential deal
Earlier, US President Donald Trump claimed that the Iranian leaders have been effectively “destroyed” and that the country is now on the verge of a “regime change.
In a media interaction, Trump expressed confidence that Iran was now willing to negotiate, stating that the new leadership is ready to engage in a significant agreement.
Trump said that Iran now exists as our country’s greatest accomplishment. “Their Navy and Air Force have been decimated, and we’ve ended their leadership. This is regime change. We are now talking to the right people, those who actually want to make a deal.”
Trump said that Iran had made a nuclear weapons prohibition agreement with the United States which resulted in a “sensible” negotiation process. He also mentioned that Iran had given the US a “gift” related to oil and gas, which he suggested was a significant gesture in the ongoing talks.
“The new leadership in Iran is different. We will see how they perform,” Trump said. “They’re ready to make a deal.”
Trump acknowledged Saudi Arabia the UAE and Qatar for their assistance in managing the Iran situation which he described as “very helpful” to current diplomatic efforts. The present geopolitical crisis has become more complicated because Trump’s statements create doubt about future US-Iran relations and the countries which will dominate the region.
