ISLAMABAD: Short-term weekly inflation, as measured by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), increased by 0.56 per cent for the week ending September 30. This rise was primarily driven by higher prices of essential items in the domestic market, according to official data released on Friday.

This marks the second consecutive weekly increase. The report indicated that prices of tomatoes, onions, chicken, and wheat flour have risen further. Additionally, a steady increase in the retail prices of sugar, vegetables, and meat has contributed to the ongoing inflationary trend.

The inflation rate increased by 0.56 per cent over the week, bringing the annual inflation rate to a record 4.07 per cent. According to the Bureau of Statistics’ weekly inflation report, 19 items became more expensive during the week, while 12 items saw a price decrease.

Among the notable price increases, tomatoes rose by 88 rupees and 22 paise per kilogram, and both petrol and diesel prices increased by more than 4 rupees. The price of garlic also increased by 5 rupees and 6 paise over the past week. Additionally, other items that became more expensive include beef, curd, fresh milk, wheat flour, dal mash, and cigarettes.

On the other hand, chicken prices decreased by 27 rupees and 39 paise per kilogram in a week. The price of an LPG domestic cylinder fell by 12 rupees and 87 paise, while bananas became cheaper by 1 rupee per dozen. Other items that saw a price drop include potatoes, lentils, eggs, rice, and sugar.
