NEW DELHI: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar faces a strong negative public response in India because of his disrespectful statements about Pakistan. The remarks were made during a period when Pakistan actively participated in diplomatic negotiations that involved the United States and Iran.
The comment made by Jaishankar faced negative comments from the Indian opposition party, who blamed Prime Minister Modi and his party for the failure of their diplomatic relations.
The comments were also condemned by Dr. Shama Mohammad, the spokesperson of the Indian Congress Party, who described the comments as a diplomatic blunder. She further added that Pakistan is currently in talks with Iran and the United States, while India has remained silent on the matter, which reflects the Modi government.
Supriya Shrinate, a Congress Party Member, asked if the Indian government has helped in maintaining world peace in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. She further asked if the proposal by India to mediate the conflict between the two countries was correctly named by the government.
Poon Khera, a member of Congress, condemned Modi’s government for its assertion that India mediated the Russia-Ukraine conflict while asking whether the country maintained its status as a neutral party.
Ashok Swain and other political analysts declared that Jaishankar used “street language” which does not suit a Foreign Minister. Swain explained that such statements damage India’s reputation as a diplomatic country.
Experts from across the world have also pointed out the contradiction in the statements made by Jaishankar. In fact, in April 2022, the Foreign Minister expressed India’s desire to play the role of a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Experts across the world have pointed out the defensive tone in the statement made by Jaishankar, which seems to cover up the failure of India in not being able to secure a prominent role in the current Gulf crisis.
The statement made by Jaishankar has raised many questions about the sincerity of India in the context of peace.
