The recent increase in the prices of petrol and diesel by the government has created a new storm of inflation in the tribal districts, especially in South and North Waziristan
As fuel prices have increased, the prices of transport fares and food items have also increased, which has plunged the poor and working class of the region into a severe financial crisis.
In remote areas like Waziristan, where travel facilities are already limited, after the price of diesel increased by Rs 7.32 per liter, transporters have immediately increased their fares by 3 to 5 percent. Local passenger vehicle and freight truck owners say they have no choice but to increase fares due to the high cost of diesel. Daily wage earners and students who travel on a daily basis are being affected the most by this decision.
The increase in transport costs has a direct impact on local markets. The prices of vegetables, pulses, ghee and flour have seen a significant increase in the markets of Waziristan. Shopkeepers say that trucks bringing goods from cities have increased their rates, due to which they are forced to increase prices.
The working people of Waziristan, who are already worried due to unrest and limited employment opportunities, are now burdened by this economic burden.
Our daily earnings are no longer enough to meet our children’s two-time bread and travel expenses. The government has buried the poor alive by dropping petrol bombs.”
Local elders, business community and social activists have strongly demanded that the government review the prices of petroleum products and provide immediate relief to the people. They have warned that if prices are not reduced and transport fares are not controlled, the battle for survival will become difficult for the poor people.
The recent increase in petrol and diesel prices should be withdrawn immediately.
The government transport fare should be strictly implemented.A special subsidy package should be announced for backward areas like Waziristan.
The public says that it is time for the government to implement the claims of the “State of Medina” and instead of rewarding the elite.
