ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik stated that, given the current situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, serious consideration is being given to imposing Governor’s Rule.

Speaking on a private television program, he explained that Governor’s Rule is instituted in cases of dire need, and the prevailing conditions in the province necessitate such a measure.

Barrister Aqeel Malik noted that Governor’s Rule can initially be imposed for two months, and it could potentially be extended depending on the circumstances. He mentioned that there have been precedents for implementing Governor’s Rule in Punjab, and given the current issues related to terrorism and the border situation, this action is being deemed necessary.

The Minister of State for Law also highlighted the challenges faced by the citizens of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, asking, “How long will we leave the citizens of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa helpless?” He indicated that plans are being developed to restrict access to the province, which is also a factor in considering the imposition of Governor’s Rule.

In response, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Shafi Jan expressed concerns about Barrister Aqeel Malik’s statement, suggesting that if the government pursues its desire to impose Governor’s Rule, it may struggle to manage the aftermath of that decision.

Meanwhile, reports regarding a potential change in the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been spreading; however, Faisal Karim Kundi has dismissed these reports as baseless. Governor Kundi stated that he is not aware of any discussions regarding the imposition of Governor’s Rule and cannot speculate on future developments. He emphasised that the challenges faced by the country and the province cannot be resolved through protests or meetings and that it is the provincial government’s responsibility to maintain law and order. The Governor reminded everyone that the Constitution does provide for the possibility of Governor’s Rule.

Faisal Karim Kundi also clarified that there was no discussion about Governor’s Rule during meetings with the Prime Minister and Bilawal Bhutto.
