KABUL: The heavy rain and snowfall events brought extensive damage to Afghanistan which resulted in 61 confirmed fatalities and more than 100 reported injuries according to official reports.

According to Afghan media reports, Parwan and Wardak together with southern Kandahar and northern Jowzjan and Faryab and central Bamyan regions experience ongoing snowfall and rain since Wednesday.

The National Disaster Management Authority of Afghanistan reported that the current weather conditions have resulted in 61 deaths and more than 110 injuries throughout the nation.

Officials reported that at least 458 houses were fully or partially destroyed. Heavy snowfall and avalanche danger conditions have caused all major highways and inter-province roads to close. Livestock losses have also been reported.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning about upcoming snowfall which will affect specific regions of Afghanistan during the upcoming week. The snowfall will result in multiple fatalities and additional property destruction.

Rains and snowfall wreak havoc in Afghanistan, causalities reported

Similarly on January 2, at least 17 people have been killed and 11 injured in Afghanistan following heavy rains and snowfall after a prolonged drought.

Media reports say in the Kabkan district of Herat province, five individuals, including two children, lost their lives when the roof of a house collapsed. Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, a spokesman for the Herat governor, reported that the deceased were all members of the same family.

According to Mohammad Yousuf Hammad, a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, most of the fatalities were in districts affected by flooding since Monday. Hammad stated that the floods have damaged infrastructure, resulted in the deaths of livestock, and impacted approximately 1,800 families.

Videos shared on social media depicted a truck overturning on the Herat-Kandahar highway, as well as a bus stuck in heavy floodwaters, with victims attempting to save themselves.

Furthermore, the floods have impeded relief efforts for earthquake victims in Nangarhar province.
