PESHAWAR: The sudden malfunction of the CT scan machine at the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC), the largest centre dedicated to the treatment of heart diseases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has created serious problems for patients coming from all over the province.

The shutdown of the machine has not only jeopardized routine check-ups but also the lives of patients brought in emergencies. According to hospital sources, a major technical glitch has occurred in the CT scan machine, which teams of engineers are busy working to fix. Doctors say that it may take time to repair the machine and it is hoped that the machine will be reactivated by next Monday.

Due to the machine malfunction, the hospital administration has advised the discharge or referral of several patients under treatment to Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC). Relatives said that heart patients are facing severe mental and physical distress in the process of being transferred from one hospital to another.

Relatives of patients from far-flung districts have demanded that a backup machine be arranged in a sensitive hospital like PIC so that poor patients can be saved from expensive tests in private laboratories or rounds of other hospitals.
