MUMBAI: The legendary Indian actor Govardhan Asrani has died at 84. A sad event that confirmed by Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Theba. The veteran known for his unforgettable comical and supporting roles passed away at around 3:00 PM after which he was cremated in Mumbai with the presence of family members.
Govardhan Asrani, an actor who held the fortune of working in Indian silver screen for more than half a century, was seen in the industry with more than 350 pictures. Among these, his comic roles were the most and that made him popular with the audience all over the world.
The actor’s work got its zenith in the 1970s, a decade when his comedy was recognized and appreciated in the movies like Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Pride, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafu Chakkar. The role of jailer in Sholay that released in 1975 not only gave him the title of a lifetime actor in Indian cinema but also took him along with the audience to the heavenly zone of filmmakers and moviegoers.
Asrani also did films in the capacity of a director and writer apart from his acting. In 1977 the movie Chala Murari Hero Ban Ne was both written and directed by him and he also made the movie Salaam Mem Saab in 1979. With this, he had his presence in the theaters where Gujarati films were screened between the 1970s and 1980s.
