ISLAMABAD: The sixth edition of the Islamabad Marathon is taking place today in the federal capital, attracting thousands of runners from both Pakistan and around the world. Ambassadors, international athletes, and a diverse mix of runners have gathered for what has become one of Pakistan’s most significant sporting events.
Islamabad witnessed the 6th edition of the Islamabad Marathon on Sunday as enthusiasts from different cities across Pakistan and members of the diplomatic community gathered for the event, braving a drizzle.
Organized by the Islamabad Run Club, the marathon began at 8:00 AM from F-9 Park and features participants from over 30 countries, including members of the diplomatic community. The marathon route begins and ends at F-9 Park, taking runners along Jinnah Avenue and D-Chowk. To ensure the well-being of participants, water stations and medical facilities are strategically located every 2.5 kilometers along the route.
According to the official of the Islamabad Run Club and race organizer, the initiative to foster a running culture in Islamabad started in 2016, with the first full marathon held in 2020. He emphasized that this year’s event highlights the growing international recognition of the marathon.
According to the organizers, more than 6,000 participants, including men, women, and children of all ages, are competing across various race categories. These include a 42-kilometer full marathon, a 21-kilometer half marathon, a 15-kilometer race, a 10-kilometer race, and a special 5-kilometer race for children under 14.
The event is being held with the cooperation of the Islamabad district administration, the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the traffic police, and the Islamabad Police. Organizers state that the marathon aims to promote a healthier lifestyle and enhance Islamabad’s reputation as a dynamic city capable of hosting international sporting events.
