Due to continuous rains and landslides, the Karakoram Highway (KKH) has been closed at various places in Upper and Lower Kohistan, as a result of which the land connection between Gilgit and Rawalpindi has been cut off.
Gilgit-Baltistan Police has issued an emergency message warning passengers and transport associations to immediately postpone their journey towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the police, it is extremely difficult to provide immediate assistance and relief to passengers stranded in the difficult areas of Kohistan, so citizens should not take risks.
The road is blocked due to landslides at several places in Upper and Lower Kohistan. Frontier Works Organization (FWO) teams are at the scene. As per reports, the debris removal operation will start tomorrow morning as soon as the weather clears.
Bus and taxi stands, and the general public have been requested to avoid unnecessary travel and consult the police helpline or the latest situation before starting their journey.
The administration says that the restoration of the highway depends on the improvement in the weather. Passengers have been asked for cooperation to avoid any major accident or trouble.
The Karakoram Highway, also known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is the single most important land artery connecting Gilgit-Baltistan to the rest of Pakistan and China. However, as beautiful as this route is, it is also geographically dangerous in the rainy season.
