ISLAMABAD: Another concern for consumers already burdened by rising fuel costs emerged on Friday as Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari indicated that electricity prices may also increase following the recent surge in petrol prices.

In a post on social media platform X, the minister stated that consultations with provincial governments are underway regarding adjustments to electricity tariffs, changes in market operating hours, and other energy-saving measures.

He explained that the ongoing energy crisis is affecting not only fuel but also gas and furnace oil, creating pressure on electricity rates.

Minister Leghari emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government is making every effort to shield the public from additional burdens. He urged citizens to conserve energy, saying this would reduce national pressure and help stabilise prices sooner.

Separately, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah warned that if regional conflicts continue, the situation could worsen, further amplifying inflationary pressures.

The announcement comes days after the government reduced the petroleum levy by Rs80 per litre, bringing petrol prices down from Rs458 to Rs378 per litre.
