SRINAGAR: Farooq Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir and president of the National Conference party, narrowly escaped a shooting attempt.

The incident occurred during a wedding ceremony in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu, where Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary, and Chief Minister’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani were attending.

According to a local newspaper, the three senior leaders were at the Royal Park in Greater Kailash when an individual suddenly opened fire. The shooting caused panic among the wedding guests and security personnel.

During the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary was slightly injured when he was hit by shrapnel from the gunfire. Officials have stated that his injuries are not serious, and he was immediately given medical treatment.

Farooq Abdullah and Nasir Aslam Wani were unharmed in the attack. Police and security personnel on the scene acted swiftly, apprehending the attacker within minutes.

The suspect was identified as Kamal Singh Jammwal, a resident of Old Mandi, Jammu. Police are currently interrogating him to determine the motive behind the attack.

Authorities have initiated a full investigation into the incident to understand the circumstances under which the shooting occurred and whether any other individuals were involved. Following the attack, security in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu has been heightened.

Senior police officials have assured that strict legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.

In response to the attack, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Allah is merciful. My father narrowly escaped a major incident.”
