Former governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and ex-caretaker finance minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar passed away on Saturday following a cardiac arrest.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar assumed office as the 14th Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan on 2 January 2006. She was the first female Governor of the State Bank. She had extensive national and international banking experience.

Before she was appointed as a Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, she was associated with the Asian Development Bank as Director General, Southeast Asia Department, a position she had held since January 2004.

She was previously Deputy Director General of the Department. She also held the position of Director, Administration, Finance and Trade Division for East and Central Asia at the Asian Development Bank.

Dr. Shamshad had extensive expertise in the financial and economic affairs of Central Asian states and Southeast Asia.

Before joining the Asian Bank, Shamshad Akhtar worked as an economist with the World Bank’s Resident Mission in Pakistan for ten years. She was also associated with the Planning Department in both the federal and Sindh governments for some time.

According to the report, her funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow after Zuhr prayers in Karachi.
