ISLAMABAD: Food and Drug administration (FDA) U.S warns parents Fluoride tablets unsafe for children under three.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to parents and dental professionals, advising that giving fluoride tablets to children under three years old can be harmful.

According to the FDA, evidence shows that the use of these tablets in young children may negatively affect their health. As a result, the agency has taken a firm stance on their sale and recommendation.

According to the FDD fluoride tablets have never received formal approval from the agency. They are generally provided in areas where drinking water has low fluoride levels. However, unlike toothpaste or mouthwash, these tablets are ingested, which can produce different and potentially harmful effects.

Because children under three are particularly vulnerable, excess fluoride intake can be dangerous, the FDA explained.

The agency has issued formal notices to four companies that manufacture fluoride tablets, instructing that their products be labeled only for children at high risk of tooth decay or cavities. The FDA emphasized that these tablets should not be considered safe for young children in general.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described the FDA’s decision as a “historic step to protect children from the risks of fluoride”. He stated that the move will not only mark a milestone in public health protection but also reduce unnecessary dental treatment risks in children.

The FDA urged parents to consult a pediatrician or dentist before giving any fluoride tablets or supplements to children under three.
